Visit Kronborg Castle in Denmark

Walk across the moat and into one of Denmark’s great Renaissance castles, positioned where the Øresund narrows between Denmark and Sweden. Kronborg’s courtyards, royal chambers, ballroom, ramparts and underground casemates give you several versions of the same place: royal residence, fortress and strategic checkpoint. From the outer walls, you can look across the water towards Sweden and immediately understand why this site mattered. Kronborg played a major role in controlling access to the Baltic and became one of northern Europe’s most important Renaissance castles. It is also inseparable from Shakespeare’s Hamlet , which is set at Elsinore, the English name for Helsingør. Shakespeare probably never visited the castle himself, but the association became so strong that Kronborg is now internationally known as Hamlet’s castle. UNESCO added it to the World Heritage List in 2000 for its architectural importance and role in northern European history. Give yourself two or three hours to explore properly, including the casemates and the views over the Øresund. Kronborg is an easy day trip from Copenhagen, with direct trains to Helsingør taking about 46 minutes followed by a short walk to the castle. Adult admission is currently 150 DKK at the gate or 135 DKK online, while children enter free. Add this to your list and explore the real Danish castle that became one of literature’s most famous settings.
