Visit Eritrea on a Route That Follows Official Advice

The modernist Casa degli Italiani building on a street in Asmara, Eritrea.

Asmara's broad avenues, modernist cinemas and pavement cafés carry the feel of a city whose architecture belongs to several histories at once. Beyond it, highland roads descend towards the Red Sea through a country rarely encountered through ordinary tourism. That rarity is not a reason to ignore present conditions. Current UK advice warns against all travel within 25 kilometres of Eritrea's land borders, reports high regional tension and limited consular support, and notes that travel outside Asmara may require permits. Build only a lawful route that remains outside every advised-against area. Check official advice immediately before any booking and again before each move. Arrange visas, permits, insurance that remains valid, reputable local support, cash, communications and medical contingency; do not photograph military or government sites. If advice expands to cover your route or reliable permissions and emergency support are not available, postpone rather than improvise. Count this complete only after a permitted journey that follows current advice throughout. Add it for the future if you want to understand a distinctive Red Sea and highland culture, with the patience to let safety and local rules determine when and where the journey can happen.
