Visit Estonia
Start in Tallinn, where medieval walls and church towers rise above cobbled streets, then head beyond the capital to see a very different Estonia. The country mixes Baltic coastline, islands, forests, bogs and small towns with one of northern Europe’s best-preserved medieval city centres. Saaremaa and Hiiumaa slow the pace down further, while Lahemaa National Park gives you manor houses, woodland and coastal villages within easy reach of Tallinn. Estonia’s history reflects centuries of Danish, German, Swedish and Russian influence, alongside a strong national identity that re-emerged with independence in the 20th century. Tallinn’s Old Town is UNESCO-listed, but the country’s character also comes through in its wooden towns, manor estates, folk traditions and the Song Festival culture that remains central to Estonian public life. Give yourself around a week if you want to combine Tallinn with at least one island or rural region. Distances are manageable, but ferries and island transport are worth checking in advance. Summer is the easiest time for a broader trip, while winter gives Tallinn a very different atmosphere and can suit a shorter city break. Add Estonia to your list and see how quickly the country changes once you leave the capital behind.
