Visit Guyana
Travel to South America’s only English-speaking country and find a destination shaped by rainforest, huge rivers, waterfalls and a mix of Caribbean and South American influences. Georgetown is the main entry point, but much of Guyana’s appeal lies far beyond the capital: river journeys into the interior, wildlife-rich forests, savannahs and remote communities make this a trip where getting around is part of the experience. Guyana is culturally diverse, with Indigenous, African, Indian, European and Chinese influences reflected in its food, festivals and everyday life. The country also forms part of the Guiana Shield, one of the world’s most important areas of tropical forest. Kaieteur Falls is its best-known natural landmark, dropping over a sandstone escarpment deep in the interior, while the Rupununi region offers wetlands, savannah and strong opportunities for wildlife watching. Give yourself at least a week, and preferably longer, if you want to combine Georgetown with the interior rather than treating the country as a short stop. Travel outside the capital can involve small aircraft, boats and long overland journeys, so planning matters more than it does in many more developed destinations. Add Guyana to your list and make room for the rainforest, rivers and interior landscapes rather than staying only on the coast.
