Visit India

The Taj Mahal reflected in its long garden pool in Agra, India.

India does not arrive as one scene. It may begin with morning light on stone in Delhi, a train platform gathering momentum, temple bells, a kitchen sending spices into the street or the sudden quiet of a courtyard beyond the traffic. Plan a region, not a conquest of the country. A first journey can link two or three places with a clear thread—Mughal and Rajput history in the north, Kerala's coast and backwaters, or one city with nearby landscape. Fewer transfers create room for food, conversation and the ordinary detail that makes scale understandable. Allow at least one to four weeks and prepare several months ahead. Climate varies sharply; much of the north is comfortable from roughly October to March, while other regions follow different patterns. Check current visa, health and FCDO advice, including areas where travel is advised against, and use reputable transport. The quoted budget excludes international flights. Count this complete when you have spent meaningful time in at least two distinct places and learned from people or institutions rather than only collecting monuments. India is too varied for a definitive visit; a good journey leaves you with a specific story and a clearer sense of how much remains beyond it.
