Visit Keoladeo National Park in India

A large gathering of migratory waterbirds in the wetlands of Keoladeo National Park.

Keoladeo begins quietly: a track, still water and the sound of wings somewhere beyond the reeds. As your eyes adjust, painted storks, herons, kingfishers and winter visitors turn the wetland into a moving field guide. This compact World Heritage park near Bharatpur is a managed wetland with a remarkable history, once a royal hunting reserve and now an important habitat for resident and migratory birds. Walking, cycling and cycle-rickshaws allow different paces of observation. Visit early, keep voices low and stay on permitted routes. Bring water and binoculars, use a recognised guide if you want help identifying species, and check current park hours, weather and water conditions rather than assuming every migration season is alike. Count it complete after an unhurried visit in which you identify several species and understand why the wetland is protected. Add it if patient observation appeals more than chasing a single photograph.
