Visit Indonesia

Choose an island and Indonesia immediately asks you to choose again. Java brings rail journeys, cities, volcanoes and temple complexes; Sumatra offers rainforest and lakes; Sulawesi reshapes the map with long peninsulas; eastern islands add coral seas and communities with distinct languages and traditions. The archipelago stretches across thousands of inhabited islands, so no single trip can represent it. Yogyakarta's arts and food, Jakarta's scale, Borobudur and Prambanan, volcanic landscapes and regional cooking all deserve time. Travel between islands may involve flights, ferries and road journeys whose apparent distance hides a full day. Build one coherent regional itinerary rather than collecting airports. Check volcanic exclusion zones and current FCDO advice, use official visa and arrival-card services, and allow slack for weather or transport changes. Add this to your list and accept that visiting Indonesia properly begins with deciding what to leave for next time.
