Visit Iraq

Iraq's story is visible in layers: ancient cities and ziggurats, the Tigris and Euphrates, religious centres, markets and modern streets carrying lives that cannot be reduced to conflict. A future journey could connect places that have shaped writing, law, faith and trade across millennia. Treat this as a future, route-specific activity rather than an ordinary holiday to arrange now. When official advice permits, build a realistic itinerary around a small number of regions, local expertise and time to understand living culture as well as archaeological sites. Current UK advice warns against all travel to some parts of Iraq and all but essential travel to many others. Do not make leisure plans for any route covered by that advice: it can invalidate insurance and reflects serious security risks. Recheck the precise regions, borders, visa position, transport, health provision and insurance immediately before considering travel. Count it complete only after a lawful, insured visit made when official advice and conditions support the chosen route—not by taking avoidable risks to tick off a country. Keep it on the future list if the history matters to you and you are prepared to let safety, local knowledge and patience determine when the journey becomes possible.
