Keep Old Havana for a Safer, Better-Supported Visit

Colourful historic façades and street life in Old Havana.

Old Havana is a city centre built in layers: shaded arcades, fortified harbour edges, restored plazas and residential streets where repair, music and daily life continue beside celebrated architecture. Its appeal is not a frozen time capsule but the tension between beauty, scarcity and a community living inside a heritage site. Do not plan this as ordinary leisure travel while official advice says only essential journeys should proceed. Keep a future walking route through Plaza de Armas, Plaza de la Catedral and Plaza Vieja unbooked, learn about the city from Cuban historians and residents, and reassess services and local impact when conditions improve. As of 31 August 2026, the FCDO advises against all but essential travel because of severe disruption involving power, fuel, transport, medical care, communications and international payments. A future visit must confirm flights, lawful entry, insurance, accommodation utilities, cash and payment rules, food and water availability, medical contingency, building safety, transport and current local instructions. Count it complete only when leisure travel is officially supportable and you have made a lawful, insured visit that does not consume scarce services irresponsibly. Add it if the history and lived city matter to you, while accepting that waiting can be part of travelling with respect.
