Visit Maldives

Step off the boat or seaplane and onto an island ringed by water in shades of blue that barely look real. The Maldives is spread across 26 natural atolls and around 1,200 islands, so the experience changes depending on where you stay: one trip might revolve around a private resort and house reef, another around a local island, guesthouse and ferries between communities. Snorkelling, diving, kayaking and simply getting into the water are usually central to the trip because the reefs and lagoons are never far away. The country makes much more sense once you look beyond the overwater-villa image. Local islands offer a closer view of everyday Maldivian life, while different atolls have their own strengths for marine encounters and landscapes. Baa Atoll is particularly associated with seasonal manta gatherings around Hanifaru Bay, while places such as Addu and Fuvahmulah offer very different geography and wildlife from the better-known resort belts. The Maldives is an Islamic country, so customs and rules on inhabited local islands can differ from those inside international resorts; for example, designated bikini beaches are commonly provided for visitors on local islands. Give yourself around a week for one island or resort, and longer if you want to island-hop or combine different atolls. Transfers matter here more than on many trips: some islands are reached by speedboat, others by domestic flight or seaplane, so check that logistics and transfer costs before choosing accommodation. The Maldives can be visited year-round, but what counts as the “best” period depends on whether you prioritise drier weather, value, diving conditions or specific wildlife encounters. Check current entry requirements and travel advice before departure. Add this to your list and experience the Maldives as an archipelago, not simply a hotel surrounded by sea.
