Visit Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky

Visitors walking through the broad Rotunda passage inside Mammoth Cave.

At Mammoth Cave, a wooded Kentucky hillside gives little away. Then a tour enters the darkness and the landscape expands underground into passages, chambers and stone formations belonging to the longest known cave system on Earth. Choose a National Park Service tour for what you want to experience, not just for its name. Routes range from easier walks to hours of stairs, slopes and narrow passages; an accessible cave tour is available on selected dates. The Rotunda, Gothic passages and Frozen Niagara each tell a different part of the system's geology and human history. Cave access is by ticketed tour and popular departures sell out, so reserve ahead. The cave is about 12°C year-round; wear closed-toe shoes with traction and bring a light layer. Confirm route restrictions, age limits and accessibility before paying, and clean footwear where requested to protect bats from white-nose syndrome. Count this complete when you have taken an authorised cave tour and learned how water, rock and generations of people shaped the passages you crossed. The forest above feels different afterwards because you know how much of the park continues below it.
