Visit the Historic centre of Mexico City and Xochimilco in Mexico

A brightly painted trajinera boat travelling along a canal in Xochimilco.

Begin where the Zócalo opens between cathedral, palace and the buried city of Tenochtitlan, then end the day on water among Xochimilco's bright trajineras. The two places reveal Mexico City as both a layered capital and a surviving lake landscape. UNESCO lists the historic centre and Xochimilco together. One holds monumental evidence of Mexica and colonial power; the other preserves canals and chinampas whose agricultural logic predates the modern city. Give each area several hours, use authorised launches in Xochimilco and agree the boat price and duration before departure. Check current local guidance, protect belongings in crowded areas, respect working chinampas and avoid treating the canals as only a party backdrop. Count it complete after exploring the historic centre on foot and taking a responsible canal journey in Xochimilco. Add it if you want two versions of one city to explain each other.
