Visit Micronesia

Fly into a Pacific map where the gaps matter as much as the islands. The Federated States of Micronesia stretches across Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei and Kosrae, with reefs, steep green interiors and communities separated by journeys that may depend on a handful of weekly flights. Stone money on Yap, Chuuk Lagoon's wreck diving, Pohnpei's Nan Madol and Kosrae's forest trails make the four states distinctly different. Nan Madol's islets and basalt structures record a major ceremonial centre, while the surrounding marine environments demand careful conservation and competent local guidance. Select one or two states unless you have several weeks, confirm every inter-island connection and insure for diving or medical evacuation where relevant. Carry your passport for domestic flights and expect limited roaming and supplies. Add this to your list and plan around the ocean instead of pretending it is empty space.
