Visit North Macedonia

Lake Ohrid stretching towards green mountains beneath a blue sky.

North Macedonia begins to make sense beside Lake Ohrid, where tiled roofs climb from clear water towards old churches and the mountains close quietly around the horizon. A morning here can move from a lakeside café to a medieval lane, then finish with the sun dropping behind the Albanian shore. Build a trip around two contrasting places rather than racing across the country. Ohrid gives you the lake, monasteries and layers of history; Skopje brings an Ottoman bazaar, museums and the modern capital. Add Matka Canyon or a mountain village if you want a day where the road gives way to walking, paddling and a slower view of the landscape. Allow at least three days, book transport and accommodation before busy summer weekends, and check current entry, wildfire and road advice immediately before travel. Hotels normally complete the required visitor registration, but independent guests should confirm the local process. Access varies sharply on cobbles, hills, boats and heritage sites, so ask each operator about steps, toilets, transfers and suitable routes. Count this complete when you have spent unhurried time in at least two parts of the country and learned something that links the landscape to the people who have lived there. Add it when you want a Balkan journey with substantial history and nature without needing to turn every day into a checklist.
