Visit Papua New Guinea

A broad Papua New Guinea highland valley seen from a forested slope.

Papua New Guinea gathers cloud forest, highland valleys, coral seas and hundreds of living language traditions into a country where travel between neighbouring places can involve a flight, a boat or a long mountain road. The attraction is depth and difference, not easy movement. Build any future itinerary around a small number of places and trusted local arrangements. Choose experiences developed with the communities involved, ask how photography and cultural access should work, and leave generous margins around internal transport and weather. Current official advice describes serious crime, tribal fighting and disruption, and advises against all but essential travel to some areas. Do not plan independent leisure travel into a region covered by that advice. Recheck the exact route, local support, aviation and road reliability, health precautions, evacuation cover and insurance before committing. Count it complete only after a lawful, insured trip whose routes and local conditions were checked immediately before travel. Keep it on the future list if you value places that resist a superficial visit—and are willing to let safety, community guidance and time set the terms.
