Visit Cusco | Peru

Panoramic view of Cusco's Plaza de Armas and surrounding historic buildings.

In Cusco, Inca stonework runs beneath colonial balconies and steep streets open suddenly onto courtyards, markets and mountain light. The city rewards looking slowly because different eras are not separated into museums; they remain fitted together in the same walls. Spend at least two days in the historic centre, including Plaza de Armas, an Inca or colonial site and a market or neighbourhood beyond the main square. Cusco stands at about 3,400 metres, so the first day's gentler pace is part of the experience, not time lost. Arrive hydrated, limit alcohol and hard exertion at first, and know the signs of altitude illness. Symptoms that worsen at rest, severe breathlessness, confusion or loss of coordination require descent and urgent medical help; a ticket to Machu Picchu does not replace time understanding Cusco itself. Count it complete after exploring the historic city and learning how Inca and Spanish layers meet there. Add it if you want a place where a short walk can hold architecture, living Quechua culture and the physical presence of the Andes at once.
