Visit Auchwitz in Poland

Railway tracks lead towards the gatehouse at Auschwitz II-Birkenau.

The railway tracks at Birkenau run towards a gate that has become one of the most recognisable images of the Holocaust. Standing there is different from knowing the photograph: distance, scale, personal possessions and ordinary buildings make the machinery of persecution harder to hold at arm's length. Visit the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial as a place of remembrance and historical evidence, not as spectacle. Allow enough time for both Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II-Birkenau, listen carefully to the site's interpretation and approach photographs, clothing and conversation with restraint. Reserve the required official entry card in advance and check the current visiting rules; standard guided visits take several hours. Expect substantial walking indoors and outdoors, strict bag limits and security checks, and contact the Memorial beforehand about mobility access or other support. Count it complete after a respectful visit to the Memorial and time afterwards to reflect on what you learned. Add it if you believe difficult history should sometimes be encountered where it happened—without pretending that presence makes it simple to understand.
