Dakar meets the Atlantic with markets, music, neighbourhood life and roads that keep pulling west towards the sea. From the capital, Senegal opens into historic islands, wetlands, coastal towns and greener southern landscapes, each with its own pace. Give Dakar several days, then add one or two regions rather than racing through the country. Learn about Wolof and other cultures, approach Gorée's history with care, eat dishes such as thieboudienne and make space for contemporary art and live music as well as landmarks.
