Visit Rorke's Drift in South Africa

Rorke's Drift is quieter than the version built by paintings and cinema. On the ground, the distances between the hospital, storehouse and surrounding slopes are short enough to walk, making the decisions and losses of January 1879 feel less like legend and more like human history. A worthwhile visit places the defence of the mission station within the wider Anglo-Zulu War, including the British invasion of the Zulu kingdom and Zulu experiences too often reduced to the role of an attacking force. The landscape connects naturally with nearby Isandlwana. Check current museum access and road conditions, allow time for interpretation and consider a knowledgeable local battlefield guide. Treat memorials and graves as places of loss rather than film locations, and compare accounts where the evidence or perspective differs. Count it complete after walking the site and learning the battle from more than one side. Add it if you want a famous story to become more complicated, more specific and more human when seen where it happened.
