Visit a Wildlife Safari in South Africa

Set out before sunrise, scan the bush for movement, and realise very quickly that finding wildlife is as much about patience as luck. A South African safari might bring elephants crossing the road, giraffes feeding above the treeline, a lion resting in the shade or a leopard appearing for only a few seconds before disappearing again. The Big Five, lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo, are the headline animals, but a good safari becomes just as much about everything else moving through the landscape around them. South Africa gives you several ways to do it. Kruger National Park is the country’s flagship public-entry safari destination, where visitors can self-drive or join guided morning, sunset and night drives. Private reserves offer a more guided lodge-based experience, while places such as Madikwe provide Big Five wildlife in a malaria-free setting. The animals are wild, so there are no guarantees, and that unpredictability is a large part of the appeal. Give yourself at least two or three nights rather than treating safari as a single afternoon excursion. Early mornings and late afternoons are usually the most productive times for game viewing, and staying inside or close to a reserve makes those starts much easier. Choose between self-drive and guided safari according to how much independence or interpretation you want, follow all park rules around wildlife, and never approach animals outside designated safe areas. Add this to your list and experience South African wildlife on its own terms.
