Visit St Marks Basilica, Italy

The domes, arches and mosaic-covered west faƧade of St Mark's Basilica in Venice.

St Mark's Basilica rewards slow looking. The gold mosaics, marble floors, domes and layered faƧade are not simply decoration: together they show how Venice used faith, trade, art and political power to tell its story. Even for a visitor who is not religious, the building can make Byzantine art and Venetian history feel immediate. Allow about an hour for the basilica itself, with more time if you add ticketed parts of the complex such as the museum or Pala d'Oro. Pause outside to read the faƧade before your entry slot, then look for how the mosaics, imported materials and changing architecture connect once you are inside. Current booked entries use named, timed tickets, so bring the required identification and arrive within the permitted window. Shoulders and knees must be covered, visits can pause for services, and people with mobility needs can use the accessible Porta dei Fiori entrance and ask staff for the most suitable route. Count this as complete after going inside the basilica and spending deliberate time with both its art and its religious purpose. A photograph from St Mark's Square is a useful view of the faƧade, but it does not replace experiencing the interior.
