Visit Sweden

Stockholm's waterfront, islands and historic buildings seen across the water.

Stockholm appears across water rather than along one centre: ferries cross between islands, ochre buildings line the old city and everyday commutes share the harbour with excursion boats. Further north and west, forest, lakes and long seasonal light change the country's scale again. Build a first trip around one city and one landscape. Stockholm with its archipelago, Gothenburg with the west coast, or a northern journey from Kiruna can each tell a coherent story. The right of public access makes nature unusually approachable, but it depends on leaving places undamaged and respecting homes, wildlife and local restrictions. Allow five days to three weeks. Summer brings long days and easy movement; winter offers snow and possible aurora in the north but needs specialist clothing and contingency time. Trains cover major routes, though long distances sell out and can make flying tempting. The quoted budget excludes international travel. Count this complete when you have spent time in a Swedish town or city and used a lawful, low-impact way to experience nearby nature. The lasting impression should be the relationship between the two—design, transport and daily life shaped by a landscape that is rarely far away.
