Visit the ancient ruins of Tikal, Guatemala
Tikal is a major ancient Maya city set within the forests of northern Guatemala and protected for both its cultural and natural importance. Monumental temples, plazas and causeways sit within a large living landscape, making the visit as much an outdoor exploration as an encounter with archaeology. Allow most of a day and begin with the Great Plaza before choosing further complexes such as the Mundo Perdido area and one of the established longer routes. A licensed guide can add historical context, but a self-directed visit can still be meaningful if you use official maps, stay on permitted paths and avoid trying to cover the entire park. The site is hot, humid, exposed and extensive, with uneven surfaces and wildlife. Carry water, sun protection and insect repellent, wear sturdy shoes, and check official hours, ticket arrangements and route restrictions. Use reputable transport or tours in rural areas, travel in daylight and recheck current Guatemala travel advice. Count this as complete after spending several hours in Tikal National Park and exploring the Great Plaza plus at least one other major complex or trail. Seeing one temple from the entrance or making only a brief transport stop does not meet the intent.
