See the Champagne Pool at Wai-O-Tapu

Steam rising over the vivid orange mineral edge and green water of Champagne Pool.

The Champagne Pool looks almost unreal: a broad sheet of steaming water edged in mineral orange, with bubbles rising through colours created by heat and dissolved metals. The name suggests celebration, but the experience is really a close view of an active geothermal system. Visit through the authorised Wai-O-Tapu route, follow the marked circuit and stop long enough to read how the pool formed and why its rim carries such vivid deposits. Early light and cooler air can make the steam dramatic, but visibility changes with weather. This is a dangerously hot, chemically active pool, not a bathing place. Never cross barriers, touch water or deposits, leave the boardwalk or fly equipment where prohibited; supervise children closely and follow staff instructions for geothermal or weather closures. Confirm gradients, boardwalk widths, rest points and accessible toilets with the attraction before travelling. Count it complete after seeing the pool from the official viewing route and understanding what creates at least one of its colours or bubbles. Add it if you want a natural spectacle whose beauty becomes more impressive when its chemistry is understood.
