Visit Göreme National Park and Cappadocia’s rock sites

Hot-air balloons floating above Cappadocia's valleys and rock formations at sunrise.

Before the balloons rise, Cappadocia is a landscape of pale ridges and shadowed valleys. Then daylight reaches the rock pinnacles, and doors, windows and churches appear in stone that communities have carved and inhabited across many centuries. Use Göreme as one base, but do not reduce the region to a sunrise photograph. Walk a marked valley, spend time with the frescoes of the open-air museum and visit a rock-cut settlement or underground city with enough context to understand why people made homes and sanctuaries here. Three to seven days allows for weather changes and quieter exploration. Balloon flights are optional, expensive and frequently cancelled when conditions are unsuitable; book only a licensed operator and keep the landscape worthwhile without a flight. Paths can be steep, dusty and exposed, so carry water, sun protection and secure footwear. Count this complete when you have explored at least two parts of the World Heritage landscape on foot or with a responsible guide and can connect its geology with one chapter of its human history. Cappadocia is most powerful when the fantasy of its shapes gives way to the real ingenuity within them.
