Experience Belize’s Great Blue Hole Safely

An aerial view of the dark circular Great Blue Hole within Belize’s pale Lighthouse Reef.

From above, Belize’s Great Blue Hole is a near-perfect dark circle cut into pale reef. At water level the geometry disappears, replaced by open sea, a rim of coral and the knowledge that the blue beneath the boat falls away for more than a hundred metres. Choose the experience that matches your ability: a scenic flight, authorised boat visit, snorkelling on suitable reef sections or a dive only if you hold the certification and recent experience required by a reputable operator. Ask exactly what the day includes before booking. The deep dive is not a beginner experience. Follow operator depth and gas limits, never enter overhead spaces or descend beyond training, use a buddy and abort for illness, anxiety or unsafe conditions; flying afterwards requires the appropriate surface interval. Snorkellers need flotation and supervision. Confirm current marine weather, assisted boarding, toilets and non-swimming alternatives. Count it complete after seeing the Great Blue Hole through a lawful experience appropriate to your competence. Add it if you want to encounter a natural formation whose simplicity from the air conceals a demanding and ancient underwater landscape.
