Visit Hoover Dam on the Nevada-Arizona Border

Hoover Dam and its intake towers seen across the blue water of Lake Mead.

At Hoover Dam, the first surprise is the drop. The road crosses a curve of concrete above Black Canyon, intake towers stand in Lake Mead and the river below looks narrow enough to disguise the scale of the structure holding it back. Walk the top for the open view, then choose whether to add an official interior or powerplant tour. The nearby memorial bridge gives a different perspective across the entire dam, while the visitor centre explains the engineering, labour and water system behind what might otherwise be only a dramatic stop from Las Vegas. Check the Bureau of Reclamation's current hours, security restrictions and tour availability; interior tours can change or sell out. Expect screening, extreme desert heat and limited shade, carry water and never leave children or animals in a vehicle. Elevators and accessible visitor facilities exist, but confirm the precise tour route and bridge access before travelling. Count this complete when you have seen the dam from at least two levels and understood one way it changed the Colorado River. Add it when you want engineering to feel less like a diagram and more like a physical argument with rock, water and distance.
