Visit the Kinderdijk Windmills in the Netherlands

A historic Kinderdijk windmill beside a calm Dutch waterway.

At Kinderdijk, nineteen windmills stand along the water as part of a working Dutch landscape rather than a decorative backdrop. Paths, canals and turning sails reveal how generations learned to keep low-lying land habitable. Walk or cycle the main route, enter the museum mills and take the boat if conditions allow. The experience becomes richer when you follow the movement of water and understand the pumps, dykes and human decisions behind the familiar silhouette. Allow three to six hours. The grounds can be explored freely, while tickets cover the visitor facilities, museum mills and boats; official online tickets are discounted. Wind and rain are common, so take a weatherproof layer and comfortable footwear and check the day's operating information. Count this complete when you have explored the mill network and can explain how at least one part of the water-management system works. The windmills are beautiful, but the lasting reason to go is the ingenuity of the landscape they protect.
