Explore Bern’s UNESCO Old City

The medieval Zytglogge clock tower rising above Bern’s old city streets.

Bern’s old city sits in a long bend of the Aare, its sandstone streets sheltered by arcades and punctuated by fountains, towers and glimpses down towards the river. It feels coherent not because it has been frozen, but because civic life has continued inside its medieval plan. Walk from the station through the arcades towards the Zytglogge and river, allowing time for a museum, viewpoint or guided historical visit. Look beyond the clock performance to the city’s planning, water system and political role, and use local shops and cafés without treating residential lanes as a stage set. Cobbles, gradients, tram lines and winter ice can affect movement, although the covered arcades offer shelter. Check official access information for towers and museums, cross streets carefully, keep clear of tram tracks and treat swimming in the fast-flowing Aare as a separate expert activity, not part of this walk. Count it complete after exploring the UNESCO area on foot or by an adapted route and understanding at least one part of its history. Add it if you want a capital city whose scale encourages close looking rather than rushing.
