Visit the Ozark Caverns in Missouri, USA

Wooded hills in Missouri's Ozark Mountains near Roaring River State Park.

Ozark Caverns offers the quiet thrill of walking into the geology beneath Missouri rather than only looking across the Ozark landscape. The route passes limestone formations, cave wildlife habitat and Angel Showers, where water appears to fall from a solid rock ceiling, making this especially worthwhile for curious travellers who prefer guided discovery to a high-adrenaline cave trip. The official interpretive tour lasts about an hour and covers a half-mile round trip. A guide explains how water shaped the cave, how formations develop and what lives in the protected underground environment; allow extra time for the drive through Lake of the Ozarks State Park and the nearby surface trail if you want a fuller visit. Traditional tours are seasonal, currently running from mid-May to mid-September on a changing schedule. The cave stays around 56°F (13°C), so take a light jacket and suitable shoes; purses, backpacks and strollers are not allowed inside to help protect bats, and reservations are available even though walk-up places may be offered. Count this as complete after taking the authorised guided tour through Ozark Caverns and giving proper attention to both the geology and the cave habitat. A visit elsewhere in the Ozarks, or to a different Missouri show cave, is related but does not complete this location-specific activity.
