Visit Turkey

Turkey can open with gulls following a ferry across the Bosphorus, continue among stone streets and market tables, then change again where Cappadocia's valleys or the Aegean coast stretch beyond the city. It is not one experience but a conversation between landscapes and histories. Choose a route with two or three centres rather than trying to cover the whole country. Istanbul pairs well with Cappadocia, the classical sites of the Aegean or a slower coastal stay. Make room for ordinary meals, local transport and neighbourhoods as well as major monuments. Seven days is a minimum and two or three weeks allows the journey to breathe. Check the latest entry rules and official regional travel advice: warnings apply to parts of Turkey, including areas near the Syrian border. Summer heat can be severe inland; spring and autumn usually suit walking. The budget excludes international travel. Count this complete when you have spent time in at least two contrasting places and learned something that connects present-day Turkey with one layer of its past. The reason to add it is the pleasure of finding those layers side by side rather than sealed behind museum glass.
