Visit Turkmenistan

The glowing Darvaza gas crater at night in the Karakum Desert of Turkmenistan.

Turkmenistan can feel like several journeys placed side by side: Ashgabat's pale monumental avenues, the ruins of Silk Road cities and long roads crossing the Karakum towards a night sky brightened by the Darvaza crater. It is also a tightly controlled destination, so curiosity has to travel with patience. Build the itinerary around places that are legally open, use knowledgeable local support and allow time for permits, checkpoints and changes. Avoid presenting restrictions or local people as spectacle. Check current FCDO advice, visa and letter-of-invitation requirements, airline and transit disruption, registration rules and photography restrictions before payment and departure. Border areas and some locations require permission; political discussion and photography of official buildings can create serious problems. Arrange insurance, cash, communications, healthcare and accessibility in detail because services outside Ashgabat are limited. Count this complete when you have visited within every current rule and spent time with both a historic site and contemporary place. Add it when you want an unusual Central Asian journey and are willing to let legal permissions, respectful behaviour and current conditions shape it.
