Tour Moaning Caverns | California

Descend into a vast marble chamber hidden beneath California's Sierra Nevada foothills. Moaning Caverns takes its name from the low sound once produced as air moved through the cave; today the accessible Spiral Tour follows stairs and a narrow spiral staircase roughly 165 feet underground into a space large enough to hold the Statue of Liberty. The standard guided tour lasts about 45 minutes and operates year-round subject to the attraction's current schedule. A more demanding Expedition Tour explores undeveloped passages with crawling and climbing, requires advance reservations and has stricter age and physical requirements. Choose the experience that matches your mobility and comfort underground. Wear closed shoes with grip and clothes suited to the cave's cool conditions. Expect many stairs, confined spaces and uneven surfaces; check accessibility, health restrictions, age rules and opening days directly before travelling. Never leave the guide or touch cave formations unless explicitly permitted. Do not plan on rappelling. The operator's official FAQ says its cavern rappel has been closed since 2017 with no expected reopening. Treat the visit as a fascinating cave tour instead, combining geology, local history and the dramatic scale of the main chamber without advertising an unavailable activity.
