Visit Socotra Island, Yemen

Walk beneath dragon’s blood trees whose flattened, umbrella-shaped crowns look unlike almost anything growing elsewhere on Earth. Socotra sits in the Arabian Sea off the Horn of Africa, combining limestone plateaus, mountains, caves, white beaches and highly distinctive plant life. Its long isolation has produced exceptional levels of endemism, with species such as the dragon’s blood tree becoming symbols of the island itself. UNESCO inscribed the Socotra Archipelago as a World Heritage Site for its biodiversity, and conservation is central to any visit. Dragon’s blood trees are vulnerable, while climate change, cyclones, grazing and development all place pressure on Socotra’s ecosystems. Tourism can support local livelihoods and conservation when it is organised carefully through local guides and operators rather than treated as unrestricted wilderness travel. At present, however, this is not a conventional destination. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office advises against all travel to Yemen , which includes Socotra, because of unpredictable security conditions; travelling against that advice may also affect insurance. Commercial expeditions do operate, but access, flights and security conditions can change, so this is an activity to plan only against current official advice rather than assuming that tourist availability makes the journey low-risk. Add this to your list for the landscapes and wildlife, but only undertake it when the security situation and official guidance make the trip realistically defensible.
