Volunteer for your local school board
Serving as a school governor or equivalent board volunteer is a practical way to support education in your community. The role suits people willing to ask careful questions, read evidence and make collective decisions rather than trying to manage teachers or pursue one personal issue. Look for a vacancy at a local school, academy trust or governing body and read the role description before applying. Expect induction, background checks where required, committee work and preparation between meetings; useful experience helps, but curiosity and sound judgement matter more than having one particular profession. The board's work is strategic: setting direction, overseeing money and holding senior leaders to account. Treat pupil welfare, confidentiality, conflicts of interest and safeguarding seriously, complete the required training and declare when you should not take part in a decision. Count this as complete after appointment, induction and at least one full term of active service, including preparation and contribution to meetings. Simply attending an information session or applying without serving does not meet the intent.
