Walk on a Glacier with a Qualified Guide

A guided group trekking in single file across the blue ice of Perito Moreno Glacier.

A glacier looks still from a valley, but the surface tells another story once you step onto it: blue fractures open between ridges, meltwater runs into the ice and every footfall lands on a landscape that is moving, however slowly. Do this only on an established guided route with a suitably qualified glacier guide. Choose a beginner walk that matches your fitness and experience, disclose relevant health or mobility needs, and use the boots, crampons, helmet, harness and rope system specified by the operator. A viewpoint walk beside a glacier is a valid alternative if travelling on the ice is not appropriate. Never walk onto a glacier independently. Crevasses can be hidden by snow bridges, weather and visibility can change quickly, and ice near water or the glacier edge can collapse. Follow the guide's spacing and route exactly, keep clear of moulins and unstable edges, and accept cancellation when the guide or managing authority says conditions are unsafe. Count this complete when you have travelled on the ice as part of a professionally managed group and learned how to move across it safely. The achievement is not conquering the glacier; it is feeling its scale while respecting how little control a visitor has over it.
