Walk Through Grand Central Terminal in New York

Grand Central works best when you enter with the commuters and then stop. People divide around the information booth, the brass clock holds the centre, and above the movement the blue ceiling turns a transport hall into a small piece of theatre. Give yourself time to cross the Main Concourse, look up at the celestial mural, find the Whispering Gallery and notice how trains, shops and city streets are layered through the building. A guided tour adds the engineering and preservation story, but an observant walk through the public areas is already a complete experience. The terminal is free to enter and is normally open from early morning until after midnight, although shops and tours keep their own hours. Stay out of passenger flows, guard valuables, follow photography rules and check live transport information. Step-free routes, lifts and accessible toilets are available, but confirm any tour’s route and hearing provision separately. Count this complete when you have crossed the Main Concourse slowly enough to notice both its design and its working purpose. Add it because few buildings let you experience a landmark without pausing the life it was built to serve.
