A Weekend in Morocco: Culture, Adventure, and Calm in Marrakech

Morocco is one of those destinations that manages to feel intense and relaxing at the same time. Even with just a weekend, it delivers colour, culture, flavours, and unforgettable experiences. We spent a long weekend in Marrakech, and it was the perfect mix of exploration, tradition, and adventure. Staying in a Traditional Riad Near Jemaa el-Fnaa We stayed in a traditional riad tucked away in the Medina, just a short walk from Jemaa el-Fnaa and the souk markets. From the outside, it was modest and unassuming, but stepping inside felt like entering a peaceful oasis. With its tiled courtyard, soft lighting, and rooftop terrace, the riad offered a calm escape from the busy streets outside. Staying in a riad really enhanced the experience of Marrakech and made everything feel more connected and authentic. Getting Lost in the Souk Markets No trip to Marrakech feels complete without diving into the souk markets. From the moment we stepped into the Medina, we were surrounded by a maze of narrow alleyways packed with life. The air was filled with the scent of spices, leather, and freshly baked bread, while stalls overflowed with lanterns, rugs, ceramics, and handmade jewellery. Getting lost in the souks isn’t just inevitable; it’s part of the experience. Every turn revealed something new, from hidden courtyards to tiny workshops where artisans were still using traditional techniques. Bargaining is expected, conversations are lively, and the atmosphere is unlike anywhere else we’ve travelled. A Traditional Moroccan Hammam Experience After the sensory overload of the markets, a traditional Moroccan hammam was exactly what we needed. This centuries-old bathing ritual is deeply rooted in Moroccan culture and focuses on cleansing, relaxation, and renewal. The experience began in with a gentle massage, followed by a full exfoliation using black soap and a kessa glove. It’s not a gentle treatment, but the result is incredibly refreshing. The massage that followed left us relaxed, rejuvenated, and ready for the rest of the weekend. It was one of the most authentic and memorable experiences of the trip. Quad Biking, Camel Riding, and a Tagine Dinner in the Desert For a change of pace, we headed out of the city for a desert experience that combined quad biking, camel riding, and dinner under the stars. Quad biking across the rocky desert landscape was exhilarating and gave us a completely different perspective of Morocco’s surroundings. After the adrenaline rush, we slowed things down with a camel ride, watching the sun dip below the horizon as the desert changed colour. The evening ended at a desert camp with a traditional tagine dinner, freshly prepared and full of flavour. Sitting outside, enjoying Moroccan food and a show as the stars came out, was the perfect way to end the day. Notes on Food, Bars, and Drinking in Morocco As a Muslim country, Morocco isn’t a destination you visit for fine dining or a big drinking scene, and that’s part of its charm. Alcohol isn’t widely available, and public drinking is discouraged, but that doesn’t mean you won’t find enjoyable places to relax in the evening. In Marrakech, there are some lovely bars tucked away inside hotels, riads, and on rooftops, offering a more discreet and relaxed atmosphere. We tried Le Grand Bazaar , Le Bistro Arabe , and La Salama , all of which served alcohol and provided a comfortable setting for a drink after a busy day exploring. Tips for Drinking in Morocco: Stick to licensed venues such as hotels, riads, and established bars Avoid drinking alcohol in public spaces Be respectful of local customs, especially during Ramadan Prices can be higher than expected, as alcohol is imported Enjoying a drink is possible, but it’s very much a background element rather than the focus of a Moroccan weekend. A Weekend That Had It All Even in just a weekend, Morocco delivered an incredible variety of experiences. From the chaos of the souks to the calm of a hammam, from the comfort of a riad to the open desert beyond the city. Marrakech is a destination that stimulates every sense and leaves you wanting more. If you’re short on time but craving culture, adventure, and unforgettable moments, a weekend in Morocco might just be the perfect answer.
